Sewing on the Lace

When Edith’s graduation from high school was drawing near, she asked if I would paint a pastel of her as a surprise gift to her mother for that momentous day. It would be a special way of celebrating. I was involved in filling portrait commissions and couldn’t promise for that time. Although Edith wanted to pay for it, I knew a teenager’s budget wouldn’t stretch that far so I suggested that she model for “Sewing On The Lace” as payment for the portrait. All went well and she was a splendid model. Nine months later, the portrait was finished in time for Mother’s Day and Mrs. Ludine Snell was one surprised mother!

The happy route Edith’s modeling for “Sewing On The Lace” took was to the *17th International Dogwood Festival Art Show then into the Rust College Leontyne Price Library, Holly Springs, Mississippi. It is always a pleasure to find just the right place for a painting where it is shown permanently and enjoyed.

Edith is now Mrs. Tyrone Sparrow. Their youngest daughter, Tessie, modeled in the painting, “Christ Blessing The Children.”

* Sponsored by the Atlanta Playhouse Theatre and The Georgia Tech Student Center Gallery. Awarded Certificate of Recognition.
